Intercellular communication is a prerequisite for the existence of multicellular organ-isms. Whereas the cellular and organismic communication pathways have been investigated thoroughly by comparative genomics and proteomics studies and enable predictions and analysis of signal cascades and signaling networks, our understanding of the interactions between molecules on a molecular/atomic level, which provide the basis for the cellular communication, is still sparse. We thus use protein chemistry and structural biology as tools to determine the molecular mechanisms of protein recognition. The newly obtained knowledge is then used to design and engineer proteins with defined properties, that can often be used in new therapeutic setups or are used to unravel new communication mechanisms.
